TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bareng Warga (With People) community has confirmed that they will not participate in today's mass protest in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) building in Senayan, Jakarta, on August 25, 2025. The protest is held in several cities after a chain message, often anonymous, containing an invitation to a protest today.
One of Bareng Warga's social media admins said they will continue to monitor and report on today's actions. Bareng Warga will also provide safety tips for people who have already followed the invitation.
However, Bareng Warga has decided not to engage directly in the rally this time. On social media X, they did not endorse or support the action.
The Bareng Warga account is known for frequently sharing information and supporting communities' activities across the country. "This time, we are not moving because we are suspicious of the action. We suspect there is a potential for the masses to not be organic," said one of the Bareng Warga admins to Tempo, Monday, August 25, 2025.
Bareng Warga stated that they have conducted an internal investigation. They concluded that the narrative about this mass protest on social media is quite suspicious.
Because some buzzers or influencers who usually oppose or undermine rallies suddenly support the narrative to disperse and abolish the DPR. "We are very worried. Many lay people are really buying into the issue," he said.
Therefore, Bareng Warga suspects that the narrative of disbanding the DPR advocated in this action did not organically emerge from society. They are also concerned that this narrative could become a legitimization to weaken the legislative institution.
In addition, Bareng Warga mentioned that the organizers of this action are not clear. When Bareng Warga asked people who are usually involved in consolidating actions in various regions, they also did not participate in the August 25 mass protest. According to Bareng Warga's information, only the organizers of the action in Yogyakarta are organically mobilizing the rally today.
Bareng Warga advocates for social justice issues, human rights, and pro-people public policies. During the Dark Indonesia protest in February of this year, Bareng Warga was one of the communities that actively reported on the situation in various regions and rallied public support.
It's unclear who initiated the August 25 demonstration. A narrative is circulating on social media that identifies itself as Revolusi Rakyat Indonesia (Indonesian People's Revolution). They invite elements of society, workers, farmers, and students to take to the streets.
In their narrative, they demand an investigation into the alleged corruption cases involving the family of former President Joko Widodo and the impeachment of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. "Let's urge the House of Representatives (DPR) to carry out its functions and duties as a government oversight," the message received by Tempo on Sunday, August 24, 2025, stated.
