TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Student Executive Board Alliance (BEM SI) will hold a demonstration near the House of Representatives (DPR) building on Thursday afternoon, September 4, 2025. The Student Executive Board (BEM SI) will begin the demonstration at 1:00 PM WIB. They are inviting all students and the public to take to the streets.

BEM SI's theme for the demonstration is "Save Indonesia." "The people's unrest is not due to street demonstrations, but rather to corruption, politicized laws, twisted history, and state policies that ignore the people," as quoted from an Instagram post by @bem_si on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

According to BEM SI, saving Indonesia from destruction is not only the government's task, but a shared obligation of all elements of the nation. Therefore, BEM SI calls on the people to unite and loudly voice their aspirations.

"The future of the nation is the right of all the people, not a handful of elites," said BEM SI.

The Central Coordinator of the Student Executive Board (BEM SI), Muzammil Ihsan, stated on his personal Instagram account that the protest was triggered by the death of Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi driver who died during the August 28th demonstration after being run over by a Mobile Brigade tactical vehicle. Muzammil stated that the tragedy should serve as momentum for security forces and state institutions to undertake major reforms.

He demanded several things, including the ratification of the Asset Confiscation Bill, an end to taxation on the poor, an evaluation of the House of Representatives (DPR) budget, an audit of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), a revolution in the Red and White Cabinet, and the release of detained demonstrators.

Muzammil Ihsan also conveyed these demands directly to the three Deputy Speakers of the House of Representatives (DPR) during a hearing at the Parliament Complex on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. This dialogue was held after a wave of demonstrations since August 25, 2025, ended in riots and resulted in the deaths of at least 10 civilians.

Separately, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad stated that the faction leaders would discuss the "17+8 People's Demands." The 17+8 People's Demands Movement is a summary of various popular demands that have become popular discourse on social media. These demands consist of 17 short-term demands and 8 long-term demands.

The government and the House of Representatives (DPR) were given a deadline of September 5, 2025, to fulfill the 17 short-term demands. The government was given one year to complete the remaining 8 demands.
