TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The X application is reportedly preparing to launch a physical debit card as part of its X Money payment service.
According to mobile app intelligence firm AppSensa, recent updates to the Elon Musk-owned app included various references to physical cards, such as customization options that allow users to add their X username to the card.
The update also introduced dozens of new lines of code pointing to features like checking card delivery status, activating the card upon arrival, reporting a lost or stolen card, locking the card, setting a PIN, and more. Some codes specifically include the terms “physical_card_option” and “physical.”
This development comes after an announcement from X CEO Linda Yaccarino in January, in which she revealed that Visa would be the company’s first partner for X Money.
“This service will allow users to directly fund their X Wallet accounts via Visa Direct,” she said, as quoted by a TechCrunch report published on June 20, 2025.
Yaccarino also explained that the new service will support peer-to-peer payments by linking users’ debit cards and will provide the ability to instantly transfer funds to bank accounts. She added that this would be the first of many major announcements planned for X Money throughout the year.
X has been steadily expanding its footprint in financial services. It has obtained money transfer licenses across the United States, growing from 12 states in December 2023 to 40 states today, including Washington, D.C.
Aside from the physical card, the new code also hints at upcoming features such as cashback, deferred debit, and separate cancellation options for virtual and physical cards. The app also appears to support potential partnerships with other card providers, including MasterCard and American Express.
X, now under Elon Musk’s ownership, has been pivoting to become more than a social media platform. In November 2022, Musk outlined his ambition to turn X into an “everything app,” incorporating payments, banking, video content, and tools for creators. The platform began testing a Payments button on its main navigation bar last year.
Musk’s background in digital finance dates back to his role in co-founding X.com, which merged with Confinity to become PayPal. In 2017, he repurchased the X.com domain and rebranded Twitter as X in mid-2023, less than a year after acquiring the platform.
So far, X has not announced an exact launch date for X Money. In a post from January, Yaccarino said only that the service would be available “later this year.” She also told the Financial Times that investment and trading features are part of X’s vision to become a comprehensive super app.
