TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - England winger Marcus Rashford had to start the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 match against hosts Mexico from the sidelines after being benched by manager Thomas Tuchel.
Instead, Tuchel chose new Barcelona recruit Anthony Gordon to fill the left wing of England's attack in his 4-2-3-1 formation.
Gordon regained his starting spot, playing in the first two Group L matches against Croatia and Ghana. Rashford, meanwhile, lost his starting spot, which he had earned in England's last two matches against Panama and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Meanwhile, on the right wing, Bukayo Saka made his second start of the 2026 World Cup, having played a similar role in the final Group L match against Panama.
Gordon and Saka flanked Jude Bellingham in England's second line of attack, behind captain Harry Kane, who spearheaded the Three Lions.
Another rotation made by Tuchel was starting Jarrel Quansah at right-back, replacing Djed Spence, who played that role in the Round of 32.
For Mexico, coach Javier Aguirre consistently retained the same starting eleven that eliminated Ecuador in the previous round.
Veteran striker Raul Jimenez continues to lead Mexico's attack, flanked by Roberto Alvarado and Julian Quinones in Aguirre's 4-1-2-3 formation.
The trio of Gilberto Mora, Erik Lira, and Luis Romo form the engine of Mexico's midfield, which will battle for possession with England's anchor duo of Elliott Anderson and Declan Rice.
Mexico is aiming for its third appearance in the World Cup quarterfinals after 1970 and 1986, while England is aiming to end their drought of winning their first and only title in 1966.
The winner of this match will be Norway, who surprisingly eliminated five-time world champions Brazil in the other round of 16 match.
Here are the starting lineups for both teams, according to the official FIFA website:
Lineups
Mexico (4-1-2-3): Raul Rangel; Jorge Sanchez, Cesar Montes, Johan Vasquez, Jesus Gallardo; Gilberto Mora, Erik Lira, Luis Romo; Roberto Alvarado, Raul Jimenez, Julian Quinones
England (4-2-3-1): Jordan Pickford; Jarrell Quansah, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, Nico O'Reilly; Elliott Anderson, Declan Rice; Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon; Harry Kane
