TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gerakan Rakyat Indonesia Bersatu (GRIB Jaya), or the United Indonesian People's Movement, has responded to an online petition calling for the dissolution of the mass organization following allegations of its members' involvement in riots on August 27, 2026.

GRIB Jaya's deputy chairman for legal affairs and advocacy, Wilson Colling, said the organization was preparing legal action against the petition's creator.

"We will issue a legal notice to the creator of the petition. We are currently preparing it," Wilson told Tempo on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

Wilson denied that GRIB Jaya was involved in the unrest in the Pejompongan area of Central Jakarta, which erupted after a demonstration outside the House of Representatives (DPR) and People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) complex. He said the organization had no connection to the groups responsible for the violence.

GRIB Jaya chairman Rosario de Marshall, better known as Hercules, was reportedly present near the site of the unrest. However, Wilson said Hercules was only monitoring the situation and helping prevent rioters from moving further toward West Jakarta.

The petition calling for GRIB Jaya's dissolution was launched on Change.org on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Created by an account named Want Safe Home, it had collected 19,845 signatures as of September 2.

The petition's creator alleged that a man identified as Bambang died after being beaten by GRIB Jaya members during the August 27 unrest.

"This is not the first time GRIB Jaya has been involved in dangerous and troubling incidents," the petition states.

Jakarta Police spokesperson Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto said Bambang was found in the Pejompongan area of Central Jakarta.

"After the location had been secured, the Jakarta Police Medical and Health Division evacuated a man who was unconscious," Budi said at a press conference on Friday, August 28, 2026.

Bambang was taken to the nearby Mintohardjo Hospital but later died while receiving treatment, according to Budi.

His body was then transported to the Kramat Jati Police Hospital between 11:30 p.m. and midnight for identification and a forensic examination.

Budi said Bambang's family declined to allow an autopsy to be performed.
