TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Norway pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16 as Erling Haaland scored a match-winning brace. Neymar's late penalty proved only a consolation for Brazil, who were eliminated, while Norway advanced to a quarterfinal clash against either England or Mexico.
As reported by ESPN, Haaland scored both goals to inspire Norway to a historic victory and secure the country's first-ever place in the World Cup quarterfinals. The Manchester City striker found the breakthrough late in an entertaining, end-to-end contest before sealing the win with a powerful low strike from outside the penalty area that beat Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Brazil, five-time World Cup champions, struggled to find their rhythm throughout the match despite enjoying periods of possession. The defeat marked the Seleção's earliest World Cup exit since 1990 and ended veteran forward Neymar's final World Cup campaign in disappointment.
Neymar had an opportunity to put Brazil ahead in the first half after Bruno Guimarães won a penalty, but Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland produced an outstanding save to deny the midfielder from the spot. Nyland, however, could not prevent Neymar from converting a second penalty deep into stoppage time, reducing the deficit but failing to spark a comeback.
According to The Athletic, Haaland's brace also lifted him level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé on seven goals in the race for the tournament's Golden Boot.
The result represents a landmark achievement for Norway, who have never progressed this far in a FIFA World Cup. Their disciplined defending, clinical finishing, and Nyland's crucial saves helped them withstand Brazil's pressure throughout the match.
Norway will now face either England or Mexico in the quarterfinals on July 6, with a place in the semifinals at stake. Brazil, meanwhile, head home after suffering one of the tournament's biggest shocks.
