TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Iranian Embassy in Indonesia emphasized that its country has never developed nuclear weapons and never will. This statement followed President Prabowo Subianto's claim that Iran already possesses nuclear weapons during his speech before the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) at the State Palace in Jakarta on Friday, July 31, 2026.
The Iranian Embassy in Indonesia issued this denial through its official social media accounts, including Instagram (@IraninIndonesia), on Sunday, August 2, 2026. The post was accompanied by an infographic titled "The Islamic Republic of Iran's Nuclear Program."
In its post, the embassy explained that Iran's nuclear program is conducted transparently for peaceful purposes within the framework of international law. "The Islamic Republic of Iran has never pursued the possession of nuclear weapons and will never do so," the Iranian Embassy wrote.
The Embassy explained that its nuclear program operates under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and remains under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Embassy stated that Iran implements one of the strictest nuclear inspection regimes in the world.
The infographic also noted that Iran's policy aligns with the fatwa of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran prohibiting the possession of nuclear weapons. "Weapons of mass destruction have no place in Iran's defense doctrine," the Embassy wrote.
Iran further stated that its use of nuclear technology is strictly intended for energy, medical, and research purposes, not for weaponization.
The narrative surrounding Iran's alleged possession of nuclear weapons was raised by President Prabowo Subianto while addressing global conflicts. He warned that given the sheer number of ongoing battles, the threat of nuclear warfare cannot be taken lightly. Prabowo also touched upon the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
"It's been said that Iran already has nuclear weapons. Now Saudi Arabia wants to have nuclear weapons too. If Saudi Arabia wants nuclear weapons, it's possible that the United Emirates also wants nuclear weapons, Qatar also wants nuclear weapons, Egypt also wants nuclear weapons," Prabowo said.
Prabowo's speech was broadcast live on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel. However, the livestream was abruptly cut off just as he began discussing Iran's nuclear program. The live video was subsequently removed from the channel.
Shortly after, a recording of Prabowo's speech was reuploaded. However, in the updated version, the segment addressing Iran's nuclear program had been edited out.
