TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia hosted the International Strategic Meeting on Scientific Pathways for Sustainable Livestock Industry Transformation in Jakarta on Friday, March 27. The Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is collaborating with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to bring over 470 participants, including international experts from 33 countries, to the two-day event.
The meeting serves as a strategic platform to advance science-based pathways for the sustainable transformation of livestock systems at both regional and global levels. It also highlights the vital role of the livestock sector in global agrifood systems, supplying around one-third of the world’s protein intake and supporting the livelihoods of more than 1.3 billion people, particularly small-scale farmers, pastoralists, and workers across the value chain.
During the event, Arif Satria, BRIN Chairperson, highlighted that Indonesia’s livestock sector plays a critical role in national food security, nutrition, and rural livelihoods. With rising demand for animal-source foods driven by population growth, urbanization, and increasing incomes, the sector faces both significant opportunities and complex challenges.
“This strategic meeting underscores Indonesia’s commitment to addressing these challenges through science, innovation, and collaboration. By strengthening research capacity and adopting sustainable practices, Indonesia aims to enhance livestock productivity while improving climate resilience,” said Satria.
Rajendra Aryal, FAO Representative in Indonesia and Timor-Leste, added, “Discussions and partnerships from this meeting will support Indonesia in advancing more efficient and inclusive livestock systems aligned with national priorities and global goals. Indonesia’s growing leadership in livestock research and innovation is also shaping sustainable solutions for the region. Through science-based tools and partnerships, FAO remains committed to supporting this transformation.”
The event will feature plenary sessions, expert panels, and parallel scientific forums on key global findings, alongside a youth research competition showcasing innovations by Indonesian young researchers.
It will also mark the launch of a new phase of the FAO’s Global Livestock Environmental Assessment Model (GLEAM), a framework that helps policymakers and stakeholders assess environmental impacts, improve resource efficiency, and support long-term sustainability in livestock systems.
Ahead of the conference, the FAO trained 100 specialists on the GLEAM model and its latest technical guidelines, developed under the Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (LEAP) Partnership to help countries evaluate ecosystem services in livestock systems.
“The world needs to have a common vision, shared responsibility, and One Health as a whole solution towards sustainable livestock transformation. Science and Innovation are essential to support countries in transforming livestock systems towards greater sustainability while ensuring food security, nutrition, and livelihoods,” said Thanawat Tiensin, Assistant Director-General, Director of the Animal Production and Health Division, and Chief Veterinarian, at FAO.
The International Strategic Meeting on Scientific Pathways for Sustainable Livestock Industry Transformation will be livestreamed on the BRIN YouTube channel.
