Indonesia Sees Progress in Defense Pacts with Malaysia, Turkey: What's Next?

3 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has approved the draft laws on the defense cooperation agreement between Indonesia and Malaysia as well as Turkey to move forward to the parliament's plenary meeting.

The majority of those present in the meeting—consisting of eight political party factions in the Commission on Defense, Cyber, and Foreign Affairs—approved the draft laws advancing to the next meeting, followed by a gavel strike by Commission Chair Utut Adianto.

"Hopefully, with the ratification approval, the programs can run more smoothly based on law," said Utut during the meeting with the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Law on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

On the same occasion, Deputy Minister of Defense Donny Ermawan Taufanto, representing the government, said that the approval of the defense cooperation ratification serves as a major part of fulfilling the legal procedures as a requirement for the defense agreement between Indonesia and Ankara and Kuala Lumpur to take effect.

He added that the defense cooperation bills are also based on the principles of equality and mutual benefit between the three countries. Hopefully, he said, the legal framework would provide certainty in the implementation of various strategic defense programs and cooperation between countries.

Member of Commission I of the DPR, Syamsu Rizal, said that despite backing the ratification of the defense cooperation bills, the parliament had a number of critical notes on this policy.

The commission warned that the defense pacts with Malaysia and Turkey must not burden the country's fiscal condition. "We shouldn't end up buying one while the others can't be operated since the platforms are different," he said.
