TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago asked the Attorney General's Office and the National Police to take action against social media accounts spreading hoaxes about riots ahead of Indonesian Independence Day in August 2026.
Djamari urged the public not to be provoked by false information circulating on social media regarding plans for massive protests this August. He emphasized that the domestic situation remains under control of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police, and the State Intelligence Agency (BIN).
However, Djamari said that the government will not compromise in the face of criminal violations that trigger unrest. "The government will enforce criminal sanctions if they disrupt the interests of the wider community," Djamari said at the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs office in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
Djamari said the information circulating on social media about potential riots this month was slander and disinformation. "We agreed to inform the public not to be disturbed by this issue. We are handling it well," he said.
Djamari has confirmed that the installation of high fences at shopping centers is unrelated to the August riots. This was confirmed after hearing direct explanations from several local governments.
"There's no such thing as installing fences. The relevant regional head has already responded in both Surabaya and Jakarta. It has nothing to do with (potential riots), as has been suggested, with the upcoming news. Nothing," said Djamari.
Djamari explained that the additional fencing was installed solely for internal security purposes for each shopping center manager, not in response to any security threats or potential disturbances.
"So, all of this is for their own security, and it's considered unlicensed, as is the case in some places," he said.
Djamari said the local government had taken steps to regulate the installation of noncompliant fences.
Previously, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung requested that the fences installed at the mall be removed.
"The governor believes the move to install high fences stems from excessive concern," said Chico Hakim, the Jakarta Governor's Special Staff for Social Communications, when contacted on Saturday, August 1, 2026.
He believes that installing high fences around malls and office buildings could potentially create the impression that Jakarta is under threat. He stated that the current security situation in Jakarta remains safe and conducive.
