TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dave Akbarshah Fikarno Laksono, Deputy Chair of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), supports President Prabowo Subianto's stance on acting as a bridge for dialogue between South Korea and North Korea.
He believes this position aligns with Indonesia's "free and active" foreign policy principles and demonstrates respect for national sovereignty. "Indonesia's contribution will remain relevant in strengthening regional stability," Dave said on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
According to him, Prabowo's remarks regarding efforts to bridge dialogue on the Korean Peninsula reflect South Korea's recognition of the credibility of Indonesian diplomacy on the global stage.
He is confident that Indonesia's diplomatic track record will allow it to continue playing a constructive role as a trusted partner in fostering world peace, including on the Korean Peninsula.
However, Dave cautioned that Prabowo's statement regarding the request for him to act as a mediator on the Korean Peninsula should be interpreted carefully, as it did not constitute an announcement of the launch of a diplomatic mission.
"His statement should be understood as an expression of Indonesia's readiness should both parties make such a request, rather than a formal announcement," said the Golkar Party politician.
During a meeting with central and regional officials of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) at the State Palace on Friday, July 31, 2026, Prabowo stated that South Korean President Lee Jae-myung had asked him to act as an intermediary for dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
He responded by affirming his readiness to visit North Korea to facilitate such dialogue. Prabowo also viewed Seoul's request as proof that Indonesia can maintain close ties with any nation in international politics, noting that the country's non-aligned policy affords it flexibility.
"During my last visit to Seoul, the South Korean President asked me whether I could visit North Korea to initiate some form of dialogue," said the former Defense Minister.
