Israel Bulldozes Palestinian Olive Trees in the West Bank

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli forces bulldozed hundreds of olive trees owned by Palestinian residents in the West Bank on Sunday, August 24, 2025. Al Arabiya, citing AFP reports, stated that the Israeli military witnessed the uprooting of the olive trees.

Most of the vegetation that was cut down included olive trees, which are vital to the economy and culture of the West Bank. Olive groves have long been a flashpoint of intense clashes between Palestinian farmers and Israeli settlers encroaching on the territorial boundaries.

Abdelatif Mohammed Abu Aliya, a farmer from a village near Ramallah, said that he lost over 70-year-old olive trees on approximately one hectare of land. "They completely uprooted and levelled them under false pretenses," he said, explaining that he and other residents have started replanting the uprooted trees.

According to Ghassan Abu Aliya, a local agricultural association leader, Israel is forcing people out. " This is just the beginning – it will expand across the entire West Bank," said Abu Aliya, the local agricultural association leader.

Residents stated that the evictions began on Thursday. A Palestinian NGO reported that 14 individuals had been arrested in the village in the past three days. Meanwhile, the Israeli military claimed to be investigating the issue.

In a statement released on Friday, the military stated that they had apprehended a man from al-Mughayyir. Israel accused the man of being responsible for terrorist attacks in the vicinity.

Violence in the West Bank has escalated since the Gaza war began following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Since then, at least 971 Palestinians, including militants and civilians, have been killed by the Israeli military or settlers in the West Bank.

During the same period, at least 36 Israelis, including civilians and soldiers, have died in attacks or military operations in the West Bank, according to official Israeli sources.

The West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967, is home to approximately three million Palestinian residents and 500,000 Israeli citizens living in settlements deemed illegal under international law.
