TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel says it has shared new intelligence with the United States that it claims reveals an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate President Donald Trump, as ANTARA reported.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, citing sources familiar with the matter, this intelligence information may escalate the already tense relationship between Washington and Tehran.
According to the WSJ, Iran has for years vowed to avenge the killing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force Commander, Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. strike on January 3, 2020, on Trump's orders.
The Israeli Embassy in Washington reportedly declined to comment. Meanwhile, Iran's Mission to the United Nations (UN) has not yet responded to the report.
The White House asked The Journal to refer to remarks Trump made at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, last Wednesday regarding the possibility of an assassination attempt on him by Iran.
"They want to take out the U.S. leader—me. I’m on every list. I saw this morning, I’m on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I’ve been a little bit lucky, but that maybe doesn’t last very long," Trump said.
Amid rising tensions with Iran, Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly spoke by phone on Thursday. The two agreed to continue coordination.
In the past two days, the U.S. and Iran have exchanged attacks after Iran attacked three merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
In retaliation for the U.S.' attacks that lasted for two consecutive nights, Tehran on Thursday launched attacks on U.S. military infrastructure in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Jordan.
