TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen upset Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova in the US Open on Sunday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. The 23-year-old showcased faultless performance, edging out the No.25 seed by 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
In a gripping three-set battle, the 23-year-old Jakarta native dominated Kudermetova in the opening set, wavered in the second, and ultimately sealed victory with a 6-4 finish.
Janice Tjen Becomes the First Indonesian to Earn a Grand Slam Singles Title in 22 years
This year’s US Open marked a significant milestone for Janice Tjen and her country, as she became the first Indonesian player to secure a main-draw singles victory at a Grand Slam tournament in 22 years.
Despite being Tjen's debut at a tour-level event, the Indonesian player has accumulated accolades, winning 100 of 113 matches and sweeping 13 ITF titles just before the match against No. 25 seed Veronika Kudermetova.
Having been the first Indonesian to play singles in a major tournament since Angelique Widjaja at the 2004 US Open, Tjen evidently drew considerable attention. “It means a lot,” Tjen said of her win, “I feel proud to be able to do this for my country.”
Janice Tjen's Inspiration in the Field
Janice Tjen's journey to professional tennis was influenced by her friend, Alexandra Eala, the 2020 Australian Open girls’ doubles champion. Tjen began her tennis career at a moderate pace, as her parents simply wanted her to be active.
“My parents were just like, 'Yeah, just go play the sport, just having exercise,’ so I’m not going to be in my room just doing nothing,” she recalled.
Tjen eventually developed a passion, leading her to play college tennis at Oregon and Pepperdine, where she finished as the NCAA doubles runner-up in 2024.
"I think during my college years, I'm always, like, contemplating if I should go for it; should I not. And I think at the end I decided to try it out and the coaches at Pepperdine told me, 'I think you should give it a try, at least for two years,'" Tjen added. "So I trust them, and here I am."
The 23-year-old also talked about how she was constantly compared to former World No.1 Ashleigh Barty, to which she responded gratefully with, “She’s, I would say, my role model. I would watch a little bit of her matches and try to copy what works for me, what’s not, and just trying to understand her game a little bit more.”
Janice Tjen to Face Emma Raducanu Next
Advancing to the second-round match, Tjen is bound to face off against British No. 1, Emma Raducanu.
“It’s going to be–well, my first thought is just, like, it’s going to be a big crowd, I would say, a bigger crowd playing against her,” Tjen said. “She’s a very well-known player and I’m just excited for the opportunity.”
In her reflective reminiscence, Tjen shared, “When Emma won the tournament and had an incredible run here, I was actually in college and I was injured at the time, so I got to watch a lot of tennis." Tjen then added, "Just seeing her doing it makes me, like, inspired to be able to do it as well."
