TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid has condemned a video statement by Amien Rais, chair of the Majelis Syuro of the Ummat Party, calling its content slanderous and misleading after it implicated President Prabowo Subianto and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
In an approximately eight-minute video uploaded to his personal YouTube account, Amien alleged that Prabowo and Teddy had a relationship exceeding professional boundaries. As of Saturday morning, May 2, 2026, the video was no longer available on his channel.
Responding to the post, the Ministry of Communication and Digital, or Komdigi, said the video contained hoaxes, slander, and hate speech.
In a written statement issued on Friday, May 1, Meutya said the narrative in the video sought to undermine the dignity of the country’s top leadership.
“The narrative being built is an attempt to demean the dignity of the country’s highest leadership, has no factual basis, and is part of an effort to provoke public disorder,” she said.
Meutya warned that such content could fuel division in society. She stressed that Indonesia’s digital public space should serve as a platform for exchanging ideas, not for spreading hateful or defamatory material targeting individuals.
She added that the ministry would take action in accordance with prevailing laws and regulations. The Golkar Party politician also urged the public not to share the video.
“Anyone who creates and knowingly distributes and/or transmits the video is in violation of the law,” Meutya said.
She referred to provisions under Law No. 1 of 2024 on Information and Electronic Transactions, specifically Article 27A and Article 28(2), which regulate the dissemination of harmful digital content.
Meutya further called on the public to help maintain a healthy, productive, and safe digital environment.
“The government, together with all elements of society, is committed to promoting digital literacy and ensuring that freedom of expression goes hand in hand with responsibility,” she said.
Tempo has contacted Ansufri Idrus Sambo, secretary of the Majelis Syuro of the Ummat Party’s central executive board, for a response to the video. As of the time of writing, he had not replied.
