TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French captain and Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe is on a roll in the 2026 World Cup, breaking multiple records following Les Blues' 2-0 win over Morocco on Thursday night at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Despite missing a penalty during the first half of the game, Mbappe proved his prowess once again with a goal on the hour mark of the match, before assisting Ousmane Dambele just six minutes later for the game-winning goal.
After the Morocco upset, France is expecting to face either Belgium or Spain—who are scheduled to face off for the quarterfinals on Friday—in the World Cup semifinals on the upcoming Tuesday in Dallas.
Kylian Mbappe Breaks Multiple Records
At 27 years and 201 days, the Frenchman has become the youngest player in the World Cup's history to reach 20 appearances, breezing past Poland's Wladislaw Zmuda (28 years, 34 days).
Citing Al Jazeera, Mbappe is both France's top goal scorer overall and the team's top goal scorer for the World Cup.
Kylian Mbappe now stands alone with 64 goals for the French national team, surpassing Olivier Giroud (57 goals) at the top of the list after France's tournament opener against Senegal.
He also has a real chance at beating Messi to the top scorer's title. Citing ESPN, Mbappe tied Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot standings with eight goals this year, but he overtook the Argentine veteran player in assists, with 3 to Messi's 1.
While this year is Mbappe's third World Cup endeavor, he has also broken the record as the fastest player to reach 20 goals in World Cup history.
First appearing as a starter in the 2018 edition in Russia, Mbappe scored a total of four goals—including during the final, making him the only teenager alongside Brazil forward Pele to score in a World Cup final.
In 2022, Mbappe scored an impressive eight goals—and two assists—across seven matches, and he scored the first World Cup final hat trick in decades. Despite this, Argentina came out on top as the world's grandest football tournament champion.
Four years later, Mbappe is on track for the Golden Boot top scorer title.
What's next for Kylian Mbappe?
During the match against Morocco, Mbappe has to leave the game late in the second half due to a leg issue. He received treatment on the pitch from France physio before being replaced by Jean-Philippe Mateta in the 77th minute.
Despite this, he downplayed concerns over his condition. "I'm all good. I got a knock on the ankle, but it's all good. JP [Mateta] was more able than me to play the last 15 minutes," he said after the game, as quoted from ESPN.
His coach, Didier Deschamps, said in an on-field postgame interview that Mbappe "had a bit of pain in his ankle."
But it's expected that he would be good to go for the semifinals—a matchup will take place against Spain or Belgium on July 14, at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
