TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manchester United (MU) secured their first win of the 2026/27 Premier League season by thrashing Ipswich Town 5-2 on Matchday 2 at Old Trafford on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
Bruno Fernandes starred in MU's victory by scoring a hat-trick. The other two goals came from Bryan Mbeumo and an own goal by Jacob Greaves. Meanwhile, Ipswich managed to pull two goals back through Leif Davis and Chuba Akpom.
The result lifted the Red Devils to 10th place with three points from two matches. Ipswich also have three points but dropped to 12th place, according to the official Premier League website as cited by Antara.
The match was fiercely contested from the start. MU took the initiative in attack, but Ipswich put up a strong fight.
The hosts' first chance came in the 12th minute through Diogo Dalot, but his shot was saved by Ipswich goalkeeper Peter Scherpen.
Ipswich then had a golden opportunity through Daizen Maeda in the 23rd minute, but goalkeeper Senne Lammens was alert and denied the chance.
The visitors took the lead in the 29th minute. Fatawu beat Luke Shaw on the left flank before delivering a cross into the penalty area, which Leif Davis finished off to score.
Ipswich nearly doubled their lead minutes later, but Lammens made another save to deny Davis's shot.
MU finally equalized in the 40th minute. Matheus Cunha capitalized on a defensive error by Ipswich and played a through-ball to Bruno Fernandes.
The captain unleashed a powerful shot that found the back of Scherpen's net. The score remained 1-1 at halftime.
MU came out strong after the break and took the lead in the 52nd minute. Harry Maguire fired a low shot that deflected off Jacob Greaves and into his own net.
The goal was checked by VAR for a possible handball by Maguire before being allowed to stand. MU led 2-1. The Red Devils were then awarded a penalty after Matheus Cunha was brought down in the box. Bruno Fernandes stepped up to take the spot-kick and successfully converted it, putting MU 3-1 ahead.
Fernandes completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute. A shot from Mbeumo deflected off an Ipswich defender and fell to Fernandes; the Portuguese midfielder immediately struck the ball to score his third goal.
Manchester United extended their lead further in the 82nd minute. This time, Fernandes played the role of provider, sending a through-ball to Mbeumo.
The Cameroonian player then executed a lob from outside the penalty area to make the score 5-1.
Ipswich continued to try and narrow the deficit. In stoppage time, a blunder by Lisandro Martinez was capitalized on by Julio Enciso, who then passed to Chuba Akpom. Akpom successfully scored Ipswich's second goal.
The score remained 5-2 until the final whistle, with Manchester United securing their first three points of the season.
