TEMPO.CO, JakartaMount Ili Lewotolok in Lembata Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, erupted on Wednesday evening, September 3, 2025, accompanied by the ejection of incandescent flames from the summit.

The Head of the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Muhammad Wafid, explained that the eruption of Mount Ili Lewotolok occurred with an observed ash column height of approximately 500 meters above the summit, or 1,923 meters above sea level.

"The ash column was observed to be white to gray in color with thick intensity and tilted westward," he said in Jakarta.

According to Wafid, the eruption, which was also accompanied by a moderate boom, was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 22.4 mm and a duration of approximately 55 seconds at 8:13 p.m. WITA (Central Indonesian Time).

However, Mount Ili Lewotolok's alert status remains at Level III (Alert). The Geological Agency recommends that the public, visitors, and tourists avoid activities within a three-kilometer radius of the mountain's summit.

The public is also advised to be aware of the potential for lava flows or avalanches and hot clouds in the southern, southeastern, western, and northeastern sectors of the mountain. Furthermore, residents are advised to remain calm if they hear booms or rumblings, as these are part of the eruptive activity.

"Loud booms can cause strong vibrations in some parts of buildings, especially window and door glass," he said.

He added that residents around Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) are advised to wear masks and eye and skin protection to avoid respiratory problems caused by volcanic ash.

The Geological Agency also warned of the potential danger of lava during the rainy season, urging residents living near valleys or rivers flowing from the mountain's peak to increase their vigilance.
