TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nearly 70 percent of Americans say they are concerned about the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran, according to a YouGov survey conducted with CBS News and reported by Antara.
Of the respondents, 68 percent described their feelings as “worried,” while 57 percent said they felt stressed and 54 percent reported anger.
The survey found that 59 percent of Americans believe the conflict is going “somewhat badly” or “very badly” for the United States, up two points from March 22.
It also showed that 62 percent of respondents believe President Donald Trump does not have a clear strategy for the conflict, while 66 percent say the government has not clearly explained its military objectives.
Trump’s statement on Truth Social on April 7, in which he threatened to “destroy the civilization of Iran,” was viewed negatively by 59 percent of respondents, including 47 percent who strongly disapproved.
Overall, 64 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the situation with Iran, up two points from the previous survey, while 61 percent gave him a negative performance rating.
Meanwhile, 87 percent of respondents said they want the Strait of Hormuz reopened to ensure stable global oil flows, and 82 percent expressed hope that the Iranian people become freer and safer.
However, only 45 percent said they support the Trump administration ending the conflict with Iran at this stage, while the rest opposed such a move.
The survey was conducted from April 8–10 among 2,387 US adults, with a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.
The conflict escalated on February 28 after the United States and Israel launched strikes on several targets in Iran, including Tehran, resulting in civilian casualties.
Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets. Tehran also restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route, triggering volatility in oil markets.
As the escalation spread across the region, a fragile ceasefire was reached, creating a two-week window for US–Iran diplomacy. The United States and Iran later held talks in Islamabad over the weekend, but no agreement was reached.
The ceasefire remained fragile from the outset, with mutual distrust persisting. Iran accused Washington of violating understandings, citing Israeli strikes in Lebanon that killed more than 300 people in a single day, while the US suspected Iran was using the pause to strengthen its position in the Strait of Hormuz.
