TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia president Prabowo Subianto has stressed the need for major investment in Indonesia’s education sector, saying education is key to the nation’s future progress.
He made the remarks after inspecting State Senior High School 1 Cilacap, Central Java, on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
“I will pay attention and I will make significant investments in the field of education for the future of our nation,” Prabowo said, as broadcast via a livestream by the Presidential Secretariat.
The former defence minister described schools as a crucial foundation for national development, adding that every Indonesian child must receive quality education.
“Those who graduate must also be prepared to work well,” he said.
Prabowo also pushed for nationwide school renovation efforts, targeting overall completion by 2028. He said around 17,000 schools had been renovated by 2025, with a goal of 70,000 this year.
“If I’m not mistaken, we have 288,000 schools. If 87,000 are completed by the end of this year, it means we still have 200,000. If 100,000 in 2027, 100,000 in 2028, all schools in Indonesia will have been renovated,” he said.
Beyond infrastructure upgrades, Prabowo also called for improvements in education quality. “The schools that have been renovated must also have their quality enhanced,” he added.
He said classrooms will be equipped with interactive digital whiteboards, or smartboards, to support learning.
“Smart classrooms currently have one per school, some have two. This is great, there are already two. Our target is to have maybe four in each school, three, then another four. This year we strive to add three to all of Indonesia,” Prabowo said.
The president also outlined plans to establish a central studio in Jakarta, where top teachers can produce learning content for students across the country. He said Indonesia must ensure equal access to high-quality education.
“For English, we will bring in native speakers, who can teach everyone who needs it. For Mandarin, the same. We want to ensure that children in schools can learn English, Mandarin, and several foreign languages starting from elementary school,” he said.
