TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stated that he had proposed a peace proposal for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. The ceasefire model is similar to the one implemented in the Korean Peninsula. There is a demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. This zone has created a peaceful condition.
"Even in Korea at present, between North Korea and South Korea, there is a demilitarization zone supervised by the UN. The Korean War has not officially ended, but a peaceful condition has been created," he said while speaking at the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Friday, June 20, 2025, monitored by the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.
In the context of the Russia-Ukraine war, Prabowo wants a demilitarization zone agreed upon by both countries. The former defense minister stated that Russia positively welcomed the proposal.
However, Prabowo mentioned that many Western media outlets criticized the ceasefire proposal. They said that Prabowo proposed peace in vain. However, Prabowo only wants to provide a peaceful solution. He wants to save the people who have become victims of war.
When he was the defense minister, Prabowo Subianto proposed a peaceful solution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine that has been ongoing since February 2022. During the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Prabowo presented four proposals: a ceasefire at conflict points, a withdrawal of troops from both sides by 15 kilometers to create a demilitarization zone, the dispatch of UN peacekeeping forces, and the organization of a referendum by the UN in the areas referred to as "disputed territories" by Prabowo.
"The UN needs to arrange and conduct referendums in disputed areas to objectively ensure the wishes of the majority of the population in these disputed areas," Prabowo said on Saturday, June 3, 2023.
Prabowo's Peace Proposal immediately received a response from Ukrainian Minister of Defense Oleksii Reznikov. The Ukrainian Minister of Defense outright rejected the proposals put forward by Prabowo. According to him, the proposal to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict is "strange," and he firmly rejected it.
Unlike Ukraine, which rejected the proposal outright, Russia welcomed it.
