TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes that the number of Indian tourists visiting Prambanan Temple will double after the completion of its restoration. Modi expressed this during the inauguration of the conservation and restoration cooperation of Prambanan Temple in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta, with President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.

"I can guarantee that after our joint efforts in renovation, the number of tourists and (Hindu) devotees from India will grow exponentially in the future," said PM Modi in Yogyakarta.

During the occasion, Modi praised President Prabowo's ability in planning the restoration project of Prambanan Temple.

PM Modi mentioned that Prabowo has a clear strategy for restoring Indonesia's largest Hindu site. "Today, I want to convey that President Prabowo, as a soldier, knows how to plan something," Modi said.

With careful planning, Modi believes that the restoration work of Prambanan Temple can be completed faster than the schedule.

It is known that the temple restoration cooperation program is a long-term project scheduled to run from 2026 to 2036. The project focuses on the restoration of over 200 small shrines or companion temples in the Prambanan Temple complex, which are currently in ruins.

Modi mentioned that Prabowo asked him to promise that both countries will complete the project before 2029. "And I need to visit Indonesia again to inaugurate the temple complex after the restoration," said Modi.

Modi then reiterated his promise that the Indonesia-India project to conserve and restore Prambanan Temple will be completed within three years. "And together, we will celebrate the restoration and inauguration with a grand festival," he said.
