TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump weighed in on the engagement of pop superstar Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, offering unexpected well-wishes despite his history of clashes with the singer.
“I wish them a lot of luck,” Trump told reporters during a Cabinet meeting, as quoted by Politico. “I think he’s a great player, I think he’s a great guy. I think that she’s a terrific person, so I wish them a lot of luck."
Swift and Kelce, a Super Bowl champion, announced their engagement through coordinated Instagram posts earlier that day.
The warm remarks marked a striking contrast to Trump’s past criticism of Swift. During the 2024 presidential campaign, Swift publicly backed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, prompting Trump to lash out on Truth Social with the words, "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!" He also told Fox News at the time that he preferred Brittany Mahomes, wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Trump later suggested Swift’s political stance could cost him financially. In a May post, he wrote: "Is it any wonder that, since I said “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,” she’s no longer ‘HOT?’”
Swift had previously endorsed Joe Biden over Trump in the 2020 election. Her political influence has repeatedly sparked strong reactions from both parties, and Tuesday’s engagement news quickly drew attention in Washington as well.
"She’s got a blank space … and she’ll take his name," quipped Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) on X, referencing Swift’s 2014 hit Blank Space.
Meanwhile, Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Florida) mocked Trump’s past feud with the pop star, writing on X: "Trump's truthful/tweet."
