TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the Israeli airstrike that struck Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza, on Monday, August 25, 2025. The attack claimed the lives of at least 21 people, including medical workers and journalists.

According to Al Jazeera, Israel carried out a double-tap strike on the hospital complex. The first missile hit the upper floors of one of the buildings. Minutes later, as journalists and rescue teams in orange jackets rushed to assist, a second projectile struck the location, killing rescuers and reporters.

Among those killed were Mohammad Salama (Al Jazeera); Hussam al-Masri (Reuters); Mariam Abu Daqqa (freelancer for AP); Ahmed Abu Aziz (Middle East Eye); and Moaz Abu Taha, a freelance journalist for several international outlets including NBC. Several medical workers and volunteers also lost their lives.

UN Condemnation and Call for Investigation

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the killing of Palestinians today in Israeli strikes that hit Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. Those killed, in addition to civilians, included medical personnel and journalist,” said Stéphane Dujarric, UNSG spokesperson.

Guterres reiterated the protection of "civilians, including medical personnel and journalists. He also has called for a prompt and impartial investigation, highlighting that “medical personnel and journalists must be able to perform their essential duties without interference, intimidation, or harm, in full accordance with international humanitarian law.”

International and Local Reactions

The Nasser Hospital strike is one of the deadliest attacks on hospitals and media personnel during Israel’s nearly two-year offensive in Gaza. Israel’s expansion of military operations into densely populated areas, including Gaza City, has further endangered civilians.

The attack drew international criticism. France, Germany, and the UK called for an investigation, while the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate described it as an attack aimed at terrorizing journalists and suppressing coverage of Israeli actions.

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese condemned the silence of many international journalists over the killings of their Palestinian colleagues.

On X (formerly Twitter), as reported by Anadolu, she called the recovered camera from the attack a symbol of resistance and suggested it should be displayed in a “Genocide Memorial” to honor Gaza’s victims.

Casualties Among Journalists and Healthcare Workers

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), at least 192 journalists have been killed in Gaza over the past 22 months, 189 of whom were Palestinian. The Gaza Government Media Office reports that at least 244 journalists and media workers have died since the war began in October 2023.

Healthcare workers have also suffered heavily, with over 1,500 deaths attributed to Israeli attacks, according to the UN. The Nasser Hospital incident follows a recent strike that killed four Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza City just two weeks earlier.
