TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Utah Governor Chris Cox confirmed that authorities have arrested the suspect in the murder of right-wing American agitator Charlie Kirk. "We got him," Cox said in a press conference on Friday, September 12, 2025, as reported by CBS News.
Cox stated that the suspect, Tyler Robinson, was apprehended by authorities while wearing clothing matching that seen in the post-shooting CCTV footage released by law enforcement.
"This is a very sad day for our country, a terrible day for the state of Utah, but I'm grateful that at this moment we have an opportunity to bring closure to a very dark chapter in our nation's history," said Cox.
Robinson, 22 years old, resides in Southern Utah and appears to have confessed to his father. The family stated that Robinson had "become more political" in recent years.
Cox mentioned that messages on Discord, an instant messaging and social media platform, reviewed by investigators referred to a rifle wrapped in a towel and left in the woods, as well as engravings on the bullets.
These messages originated from an individual named "Tyler" and were conveyed by an unidentified individual, the governor stated.
Cox thanked the family of the shooting suspect, whom he believes "did the right thing" by bringing him to law enforcement.
The governor also expressed gratitude to the Kirk family, including his parents, wife Erika, and children.
Cox's press conference was held after President Donald Trump stated on Fox News that a suspect in Kirk's shooting had been apprehended.
"I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody. Everybody has done a great job," the president said.
"Essentially, somebody that was very close to him turned him in," Trump said, adding that the suspect's capture would be announced later today.
Trump stated that the suspect's father had persuaded his son to surrender.
"I just heard about it five minutes ago, Trump said.
Trump expressed hope that Kirk's killer would receive the death penalty. "I hope he gets the death penalty," said Trump.
