TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The price of an iPhone can vary significantly depending on where it is purchased. While Apple sets global pricing strategies, consumers in some countries pay far more than others due to taxes, import costs, currency conditions, and local market factors.

Why iPhone Prices Vary Around the World

Several factors influence iPhone prices across different markets. Taxes and import duties are among the biggest contributors, often increasing the final retail price for consumers. Currency fluctuations and inflation can also affect how much buyers pay compared with prices in the United States. Each country has different tax structures and economic conditions; the same iPhone model can have a very different price tag depending on the market.

Some countries rank significantly higher in iPhone prices, with consumers paying hundreds of dollars more than buyers in other markets. The gap is largely caused by additional taxes, tariffs, and local pricing conditions.

As Visual Capitalist reported, citing Deutsche Bank data on the price of Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro (256 GB) across 41 markets in 2026, Turkey tops the ranking at $2,592, more than $1,400 above the U.S. price of $1,181. Brazil ranks second at $2,260, while Egypt follows at $1,872.

Europe dominates much of the ranking’s upper half, partly because listed iPhone prices already include value-added tax (VAT). VAT rates vary widely across the region, from 27 percent in Hungary to slightly above 8 percent in Switzerland, creating notable differences in final retail prices.

Where iPhones Are the Cheapest

On the other hand, some markets offer lower iPhone prices due to favorable tax policies, lower import costs, or a stronger currency. These countries often become attractive destinations for buyers looking for better deals.

Japan records the cheapest price for the iPhone 17 Pro (256 GB) at $1,121—slightly below U.S. prices. It is among the few markets where Apple’s flagship iPhone is more affordable than in the U.S.

A relatively low 10 percent consumption tax, strong competition in Japan’s smartphone market, and Apple’s established pricing approach have contributed to lower iPhone prices compared with many other countries. However, Apple has recently increased prices for some products in Japan as the yen’s prolonged weakness and changing exchange rates have affected costs.

Global iPhone price rankings are not fixed and can shift over time. Changes in currency values, tax policies, and import regulations can quickly alter which countries offer the most affordable or expensive prices.
