TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Presidential Palace has opened registration for the public wishing to attend the Republic of Indonesia's 81st Independence Day ceremony at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on August 17, 2026. Hundreds of thousands of people participated in the scramble for invitations—often dubbed a "ticket war"—which opened on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi stated that 128,331 people participated in the online registration process. They came from 36 Indonesian provinces and 14 countries. "Alhamdulillah, public enthusiasm has been extraordinary," said Prasetyo Hadi in a written statement on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
The minister expressed his appreciation to people who participated in the effort to secure the invitations. He noted that the high level of public interest reflects people's enthusiasm to attend Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day ceremony at the palace in person.
Given the high number of applicants, Prasetyo apologized to people who were unable to secure an invitation. However, he stated that there is no need for concern, as the government will once again open the process for obtaining invitations on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
President Prabowo Subianto will serve as the ceremony inspector at the peak of the Republic of Indonesia's Independence Day commemorations. On this occasion, Prabowo has also invited prominent national figures to attend the ceremony at the Palace in Jakarta.
"The President has directed that invitations to the Commemoration or the Proclamation Moment Ceremony be extended to all national figures—including former presidents and vice presidents—requesting the honor of their presence at the Proclamation Moment Ceremony," said Deputy Minister of State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro.
In addition to the ceremonies at the Presidential Palace, the government organized a public celebration at the National Monument (Monas) area on the same day. A wide range of activities were provided, including traditional Independence Day games, children's rides, entertainment stages, drone shows, video mapping displays, wayang (puppet) performances, and fireworks. Free food was also provided.
