185 Gazans Killed by Famine in August, Highest Monthly Toll Since Israeli Genocide

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Gaza Health Ministry announced on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, that 185 Palestinians, including 12 children, died from famine in August, the highest monthly toll since Israel’s war on the enclave began nearly two years ago, Anadolu reported.

Within the past 24 hours alone, 13 people, including three children, lost their lives.

The ministry noted that 70 deaths occurred after the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) officially declared Gaza a famine zone last month. Since the war began on October 7, 2023, famine-related deaths in Gaza have reached 361 people, including 130 children.

Health officials warn the situation is worsening. More than 43,000 children under the age of five are now suffering from malnutrition, alongside 55,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women. Alarming figures show 67 percent of pregnant women in Gaza are experiencing anemia—the highest rate recorded in years.

Officials cautioned that without urgent deliveries of food and medicine, the death toll will continue to rise.

Meanwhile, Israel’s ongoing military campaign has left Gaza devastated. According to Al Jazeera, Israeli forces have killed at least 63,557 Palestinians and injured 160,660. The bombardment has flattened neighborhoods, destroyed hospitals, schools, and bakeries, and further tightened the blockade on humanitarian aid.

On August 22, IPC reported that 514,000 people, or nearly a quarter of Gaza’s population, are already experiencing famine, with projections that the number will rise to 641,000 by the end of September.

IPC stressed this is the first famine it has documented outside Africa, warning conditions will spread to Deir el-Balah and Khan Younis in the coming weeks.

Following IPC’s declaration, UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the crisis as a “man-made disaster, a moral indictment and a failure of humanity itself.” He emphasized that Israel, as the occupying power, has a “unequivocal obligation” under international law to provide food and medicine to Gaza.

Israel, however, has rejected IPC’s findings, insisting that “there is no famine” despite mounting evidence.

Violence on the ground continues to escalate. At least 54 Palestinians were killed on Tuesday alone, including several people seeking aid, Al Jazeera correspondent Tareq Abu Azzoum reported from Deir el-Balah. He noted that Israeli forces have intensified attacks on Gaza City, bombarding residential areas and attempting to force civilians southward.

Civilians on the ground are bearing the brunt. There are still hundreds of thousands of families in Gaza City” Azzoum said.

They refuse to leave because they know that there are no safe spaces in central and southern Gaza and they would rather stay close to their communities and what’s left of their houses.

Once home to nearly one million Palestinians, Gaza City is now reduced to rubble.

International legal bodies have taken action. Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Separately, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its military campaign in Gaza.
