TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Around 60 percent of Generation Z (Gen Z) in the United States (US) supports the Palestinian resistance group Hamas over Israel in the ongoing war between Tel Aviv and Gaza, according to a new survey, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Sunday.
As part of a broad set of questions, the survey asked online respondents: "In the Israel-Hamas conflict, do you support more Israel or more Hamas?"
According to the online survey released this week, 60 percent of young people aged 18 to 24, or Generation Z, expressed support for Hamas over Israel.
Despite this generational shift, as reported by I24 News, overall US public opinion still leans more toward Israel, with only 26 percent of respondents expressing support for Hamas over Israel.
Among older demographics, support for Israel is reportedly much higher.
Among the age groups that supported Israel were 65 percent of those aged 25-34, 70 percent of those aged 35-44, 74 percent of those aged 45-54, 84 percent of those aged 55-64, and 89 percent of those aged 65 and over.
The poll also found that voters were evenly split on whether Israel was committing genocide in Gaza, with a 50-50 split.
The survey also revealed that a majority of respondents (51 percent) believed criticism of Israel was driven by concern for Palestinian human rights, rather than antisemitism.
Conducted by The Harvard Harris Poll and HarrisX between August 20-21, with 2,025 registered voters and a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points, the poll has been widely cited as evidence of a fundamental shift in American public opinion.
Israeli attacks have killed nearly 63,400 Palestinians since October 2023, devastating the enclave as famine spreads in the second year of the genocide.
Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its war in the enclave.
