TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has not yet agreed to recognize the results of Myanmar's recent elections, which installed former junta leader Min Aung Hlaing as the country's new president.

"At the moment, ASEAN has not reached any consensus with regard to the recognition of the results of the election in Myanmar," said Philippine Assistant Secretary of Foreign Affairs Dominic Xavier Imperial on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 as reported by the Philippine News Agency and cited by Anadolu.

This year, the Philippines is chairing the 11-member association.

Min Aung Hlaing resigned from his position as commander-in-chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces last March to run for president.

The three-phase election process, held from December 2025 to January 2026, resulted in victories for pro-military parties, including the Union Solidarity and Development Party.

Ming Aung Hlaing was then inaugurated as President of Myanmar last April, after securing 429 out of 500 votes in parliamentary voting.

Responding to the Myanmar election results, Imperial stated that ASEAN continues to adhere to the Five-Point Consensus (5PC)—the bloc's agreed-upon framework for addressing the crisis in Myanmar.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement on Wednesday urging Myanmar to grant access to the ASEAN Chair's special envoy to meet with former President Aung San Suu Kyi, who has remained detained since her 2021 military coup.

"Such would be in line with the special envoy's role to engage with all stakeholders and parties to create an environment conducive to inclusive national dialogue," the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said.

Furthermore, the Philippines welcomed reports of Suu Kyi's transfer from prison to house arrest and the commutation of part of her sentence, as well as the amnesty granted by Myanmar authorities to more than 1,500 political prisoners.
