BMKG Warns of Potential Extreme Weather in West Java During Seasonal Transition

3 months ago 39

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged everyone to be cautious and anticipate the potential for extreme weather during the seasonal transition from rainy to dry season in West Java. In the past few days, West Java has experienced hot weather during the day followed by rain in the afternoon and night.

During the current transitional period, the usual rain pattern in the afternoon to the evening is preceded by warm and scorching air in the morning to the afternoon. In addition, the characteristics of rain during the transition period tend to be uneven with moderate to very heavy intensities, accompanied by lightning and strong winds in a short duration.

According to the Head of the BMKG West Java Climatology Station, Rakhmat Prasetia, several atmospheric dynamic factors are predicted to contribute to increased water vapor supply and support the occurrence of rainfall in parts of West Java in the week of June 9-15, 2025.

The sea surface temperature in some Indonesian waters is relatively warm, and cyclonic circulation is predicted to still have the potential to form in the west of Sumatra. "However, it does not directly have a dominant influence on the West Java region," he said in a statement on Sunday, June 8, 2025.

Another factor is the Kelvin-type atmospheric waves which are predicted to be active in parts of West Java in the middle of the week. Atmospheric instability is in the category of mild to strong instability, supporting the growth of convective clouds on a local scale.

Potential moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds, he said, may occur on a local scale and for a short duration on Monday, June 9, 2025, in Bekasi, Karawang, Purwakarta, Subang, and West Bandung Regency. Similar conditions on Tuesday are likely to occur in Purwakarta, Subang, and Majalengka.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday and Thursday, it is predicted that there will be no moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds in West Java. The potential for rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds on Friday in Indramayu, Saturday in Pangandaran, and Sunday in Bogor Regency, Bekasi Regency, and Pangandaran.
