The two victims were identified as Heng Wen Qiang Timothy, 30, and Shahin Muhrez bin Abdul Hamid, 27. Rescue teams found their bodies buried under volcanic material about 50 meters from the crater.
“The rescue team has now begun the evacuation process for the victims’ bodies, and the operation is still ongoing,” Iwan Ramdani told Tempo from the evacuation post in Mamuya Village on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
Iwan said the evacuation effort has been hampered by difficult terrain and worsening weather conditions, including heavy rain. Rescue operations were also complicated by continuing volcanic activity at Mount Dukono, which has continued to eject volcanic ash, hot material, and pyroclastic flows in several directions.
According to Saum Amin, the volcano was still erupting as of Sunday. Authorities observed an ash column rising around 800 meters above the summit, drifting east, southeast, south, and southwest.
The latest eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of one minute and 37 seconds.
“Mount Dukono remains at Alert Level II,” Saum said.
Authorities have advised residents and tourists not to approach the volcano within a four-kilometer radius of the crater. Officials also urged people to wear masks or face coverings due to ongoing volcanic ash emissions, which continue to spread depending on wind direction and speed.
Earlier reports said 20 hikers were affected by the eruption on Friday morning. Seventeen survived, including seven Singaporean nationals, while three hikers were confirmed dead. In addition to Heng and Shahin, the third victim was an Indonesian hiker identified as Engel Krishela Pradita, whose body was evacuated on Saturday.
