TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Attorney General's Office (AGO) has officially named Nadiem Makarim, the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for the 2019-2024 period, as a suspect in the Chromebook laptop procurement corruption case for the 2019-2022 period. "Today, the investigators have designated one person with the initials NAM as the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for the 2019-2024 period," said Nurcahyo Jungkung Madyo, the Director of Investigation of AGO's Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus), during a press conference at the AGO's Special Crimes (Pidsus) building on Thursday, September 4, 2025.
Previously, in an official release, the Prosecutor's Office mentioned that Nadiem instructed the four suspects during a Zoom meeting on May 6, 2020, to procure ChromeOS laptops from Google. Meanwhile, a study claiming that Chromebooks are superior to other products, including Windows, was only published in June 2020.
The Prosecutor's Office had previously designated four individuals as suspects. They are Nadiem's former Special Staff, Jurist Tan; former consultant of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Ibrahim Arief; Director of Elementary Schools at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for the 2020-2021 period, Sri Wahyuningsih; and Director of Junior High Schools at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for the 2020-2021 period, Mulyatsyah. They were declared suspects on July 15, 2025. On that day, Nadiem was also interrogated for nine hours but was allowed to go home.
The prosecutors stated that Nadiem formed a WhatsApp group called "Mas Menteri Core Team" in August 2019, which occurred three months before his inauguration as minister in October 2019. The group was used to discuss plans for digitalizing education programs at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. Nadiem formed the group with his former special staff, Fiona Handayani. Fiona has also been questioned several times as a witness in this case.
Another aspect investigated by the authorities is Google's investment in PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia in 2020. Gojek is a company founded by Nadiem. The company merged with Tokopedia in 2021. Investigators are probing whether the selection of Chromebooks is related to Google's investment in Gojek. Chromebook is a product of Google.
