TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Commission of Ethics of the Indonesian National Police has decided on the dishonorable discharge of Police Commissioner Kosmas Kaju Gae, a member of the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) who ran over an online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan to his death. Kosmas stated that his actions were carried out as per orders.

"I was merely carrying out my duties and responsibilities according to the institution's orders and the commander's orders," said Kosmas during the commission's session at the National Police Headquarters on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

Kosmas mentioned that he was trying to maintain the security of all personnel inside the vehicle. "The incident was not intentional, I swear to God, there was no intention to harm anyone, quite the opposite," he said.

Kosmas broke down in tears during the trial. He then apologized to Affan Kurniawan's family. Kosmas also apologized to the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo for negligence in carrying out his duties.

Kosmas has not appealed. He stated that he will consult with his family and closest associates.

Aside from Kosmas, there are six other Brimob members undergoing an ethical process. They are the vehicle driver Brigadier Kepala Rohmat and five other passengers, namely: Brigadier Satu Danang, Brigadier Dua Mardin, Bharaka Kepala Jana Edi, Bharaka Kepala Yohanes David, and Ajun Inspektur Dua M Rohyani.

Bripka Rohmat is scheduled to undergo an ethics trial on Thursday, September 4, 2025. The five other members sitting in the back are suspected of committing moderate ethical violations. Moderate ethical violations can lead to demotion or transfer. The trials for these five police officers will soon follow.

In addition to ethical concerns, the Professionalism and Security Division (Propam) of the Indonesian National Police also found criminal elements by Kosmas and Rohmat in the incident. Propam has handed over the criminal investigation to the Police Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim). Bareskrim conducted a case examination on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. If criminal elements are proven, Kompol Cosmas and Bripka Rohmat will undergo further examination at Bareskrim Polri.

Affan Kurniawan was crushed to death by a Brimob vehicle in the Pejompongan area, Central Jakarta, on Thursday night, August 28, 2025. At that time, he was delivering food orders, which required him to break through a crowd of demonstrators.

Based on videos circulated on social media, Affan fell before being ran over and crushed by the Brimob vehicle. Several eyewitnesses stated that Affan was trying to retrieve his mobile phone which fell to the ground. The death of Affan Kurniawan led to a massive and deadly demonstrations against the Indonesian police.
