TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is set to present its adsorbed natural gas (ANG) technology as a potential alternative to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) during a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace in Jakarta on Thursday.
BRIN Head Arif Satria said the technology is among the agency’s featured innovations being showcased due to its potential role in supporting Indonesia’s energy security.
“Some of these are potential products that have not yet entered the market but have promising prospects. One example is ANG technology, which could become part of Indonesia’s energy transformation,” Arif told reporters upon arriving at the State Palace.
ANG Technology Uses Lower Pressure Storage
Arif said ANG technology has an advantage because it can store natural gas at pressures below 30 bar, potentially making it an alternative to LPG.
He said the technology could help improve gas efficiency and reduce dependence on imported energy resources if it reaches wider adoption.
“If ANG can be used at pressures below 30 bar, it could become a substitute for LPG. This is one of the technologies that could provide solutions in the energy sector,” he said.
According to BRIN, ANG is a natural gas storage technology that uses porous adsorbent materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), allowing gas to be stored at significantly lower pressures compared with compressed natural gas (CNG).
The technology could offer advantages in terms of safety, storage efficiency, and potentially lower system costs. However, ANG still requires further development before it can be widely commercialized.
BRIN Showcases Hundreds of Research Innovations
Beyond ANG technology, BRIN is displaying around 150 to 200 innovations from 12 research clusters, covering areas including food, health, transportation, housing, aerospace, aviation, nuclear technology, rare earth metals, and innovations supporting programs such as the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) initiative and fishing village development.
Arif said Prabowo is scheduled to review the displayed innovations and meet with researchers involved in their development.
The BRIN chief said the exhibition aims to highlight research outcomes that could address national challenges, particularly in strategic sectors such as energy.
The agency’s presentation comes as Indonesia continues efforts to develop domestic energy solutions and reduce reliance on conventional fuel sources.
