TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Deputy Prime Minister of Britain, Angela Rayner, has resigned from both the cabinet and the Labour Party following revelations that she failed to pay the full property purchase tax on her new home.
"Given the findings, and the impact on my family, I have therefore decided to resign as deputy prime minister and secretary of state for housing, communities and local government, as well as deputy leader of the Labour party.," Rayner wrote in an open letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday, according to The Guardian.
" I accept that I did not meet the highest standards in relation to my recent property purchase," she added.
Investigations revealed that Rayner did not fully pay the purchase tax on her £800,000 house in Hove, a seaside town in East Sussex, southeast England, ITV reported.
In her letter, Rayner explained that she initially believed she was exempt from the tax because she had given up her share of the family home. After consulting a law firm, she realized her error.
"I deeply regret my decision to not seek additional specialist tax advice given both my position as housing secretary and my complex family arrangements. I take full responsibility for this error," Rayner said.
The resignation was highlighted by the right-wing populist party Reform UK, which is currently holding its party congress in Birmingham. Party leader David Bull stated that the Labour government under PM Starmer is "collapsing before their eyes."
