TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Arif Budimanta, a prominent economist and former member of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) for the 2009–2014 period, passed away on Saturday morning, September 6, 2025. The news was shared by the central leadership of Muhammadiyah on social media.
"The central leadership of Muhammadiyah expresses deep condolences for the passing of Arif Budimanta," the post read.
Born in Medan on March 15, 1968, Arif Budimanta was widely recognized for his contributions to economics, business, and sustainable development.
He served as the Chair of the Economic, Business, and Tourism Council of Muhammadiyah and was the founder of the Indonesia Center for Sustainable Development research institute.
Arif earned a bachelor’s degree in Soil Science from the Bogor Agricultural Institute in 1990 and a master’s in Natural Resource Economics from the University of Indonesia in 1996. He also studied finance at the University of Chicago and participated in the Senior Executive Program at Harvard Business School.
Beyond academia, Arif had notable stints in government. From 2016 to 2020, he served as Vice Chairman of the National Industrial Economic Committee under former president Joko Widodo (Jokowi).
During Jokowi’s second term, he was appointed as a Special Staff for Economic Affairs, advising on national economic strategy and development.
