Epstein's Purported Suicide Note Made Public in US Court

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A federal judge in the United States (US) has unsealed an alleged suicide note purportedly written by Jeffrey Epstein, marking the first time the document has been made public years after the convicted sex offender’s death in jail.

The note was released on Wednesday by Judge Kenneth M. Karas of the Federal District Court in White Plains, New York, years after it had remained sealed as part of the criminal case involving Epstein’s former cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione.

“They investigated me for months — FOUND NOTHING!!!” the note reads. “It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye.”

“Watcha want me to do — Bust out cryin!!” it continued, before concluding with the underlined words: “NO FUN. NOT WORTH IT!!”

The note does not contain a signature, and its authenticity has not been independently verified.

According to The New York Times, the document surfaced after Tartaglione claimed he found it inside a graphic novel following Epstein’s apparent suicide attempt in July 2019. Epstein was discovered unresponsive in his jail cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City with a strip of cloth around his neck, but survived the incident.

Tartaglione told the newspaper that the note was written on yellow paper torn from a legal pad. He said he later handed the document to his lawyers because he believed it could become relevant if Epstein continued accusing him of assault.

At the time, Epstein initially claimed that Tartaglione had attacked him and insisted he was not suicidal. Tartaglione has repeatedly denied assaulting Epstein. Later jail records reportedly showed Epstein telling officials that he “never had any issues” with his cellmate.

Weeks after the incident, Epstein was found dead in his jail cell at the age of 66. New York City’s medical examiner ruled the death a suicide, although the case has continued to generate widespread public speculation and conspiracy theories amid revelations of security failures inside the jail.

The note itself remained hidden from public view for years, even after the U.S. Justice Department released millions of pages of records related to Epstein in what officials described as an unprecedented transparency effort.

The New York Times reported that federal prosecutors in Manhattan did not oppose the document’s release after the newspaper petitioned the court to unseal it. Prosecutors reportedly told the judge there was “a strong public interest in the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death.”

Separately, The Guardian reported that the document became public only after the newspaper article detailing its existence prompted renewed legal scrutiny over the sealed filing.

The British newspaper also noted that the US Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the authenticity of the note or the circumstances surrounding its release.

Tartaglione, a former police officer from Briarcliff Manor, New York, was convicted in 2023 in a quadruple murder case and is currently serving four life sentences. He continues to maintain his innocence and has appealed the conviction.

According to court filings cited in reports, the note later became entangled in a lengthy legal dispute among Tartaglione’s lawyers, which contributed to the document remaining under seal for years under attorney-client privilege protections.

Despite the note’s publication, authorities have not provided any new conclusions regarding Epstein’s death. The exact origins of the document and whether Epstein personally wrote it remain unconfirmed.
