TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs demands an explanation from Timor Leste regarding the shooting incident involving an Indonesian citizen in the land dispute along the borders of the two countries in East Nusa Tenggara.
According to Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indonesian Ambassador to Timor Leste, Okto Dorinus Manik, has directly inspected the location of the incident and coordinated with relevant parties on the ground.
"The Indonesian Embassy in Dili has also directly requested clarification from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Timor Leste," Nabyl responded to Antara's question in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
He also confirmed that the Indonesian citizen who was the victim of the shooting has been evacuated and is receiving medical treatment at the local hospital.
Previously, the Commander of the Indonesian-Timor Leste Border Security Task Force, Lieutenant Colonel Reindi Trisetyo Nugroho, confirmed that an Indonesian citizen named Paulus Oki from North Central Timor (TTU) Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, was shot at the Indonesia-Timor Leste border on Monday.
"The shooting incident in the Inbate area, Bikomi Nilulat District, Timor Tengah Utara Regency, occurred during a conflict between an Indonesian citizen from TTU and a Timor Leste citizen over the disputed land between Indonesia and Timor Leste," said Lieutenant Colonel Reindi when contacted from Kupang on Monday.
Colonel Reindi stated that from the gunshot wound on the victim's right shoulder, it was evident that the wound was caused by rubber bullets or non-lethal ammunition.
Subsequently, during the crime scene investigation conducted by the TTU Regional Police at the location, eight bullet casings and 1 projectile that are suspected to have come from the border patrol unit of Timor Leste or "Unidade de Patrulhamento da Fronteira" (UPF) were found.
It is worth noting that the land contested by the Indonesian citizens from TTU and Timor Leste residents has been a long-standing dispute between the two countries.
In addition to the land in TTU, Land conflicts between Indonesia and Timor Leste also occur in the Naktuka area of Kupang Regency and remain unresolved to this day.
Indonesian citizen Paulus Oki becomes the second victim of a shooting around the RI-RDTL border after an Indonesian with the initials AB was found dead from gunshot wounds while hunting wild animals in the forests of Timor Leste on August 16.
