Hezbollah Leader Rejects US-Backed Israel-Lebanon Agreement

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem has rejected the U.S.-brokered framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon, declaring it "null and void" and calling instead for the implementation of the Iran-U.S. memorandum of understanding, according to DW.

In his first public remarks on the agreement signed in Washington on Friday, Qassem described the deal as "humiliating, shameful, and a surrender of sovereignty," according to remarks quoted by Anadolu.

"This agreement is null and void, and the provisions of the Iranian-American memorandum of understanding must be implemented," Qassem said on Saturday.

He also rejected any proposal linking Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon to Hezbollah's disarmament, warning that such a condition crossed "all red lines."

According to Anadolu, Qassem said tying an Israeli withdrawal to the disarmament of the resistance across Lebanon would be "a very dangerous proposal" that would turn the country "into a plaything in the hands of the Israeli enemy."

His comments came a day after Lebanon and Israel signed a U.S.-sponsored framework agreement in Washington following the fifth round of negotiations aimed at resolving longstanding disputes between the two countries.

The deal has sparked mixed reactions in Lebanon. Some politicians and media outlets have hailed it as a historic breakthrough and an opportunity to stabilize the country, while critics have condemned it as a unilateral concession to Israel.

The agreement follows months of cross-border conflict that, according to Lebanese authorities, has killed more than 4,000 people and injured over 4,000 others since March 2.

Meanwhile, Israel has maintained a self-declared "security buffer zone" extending about 10 kilometers (6 miles) into southern Lebanon, saying the area is intended to protect Israeli communities from Hezbollah attacks. However, there have been reports of Israeli troops operating beyond the buffer zone and the Litani River.
