TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The UN's International Maritime Organization (IMO) has suspended its evacuation operation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz following the shelling of a cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman.
"Following an attack on a vessel in the Gulf of Oman, IMO has decided to temporarily pause its evacuation operation pending further clarity," the organization stated on Thursday.
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez emphasized that the targeted ship had been navigating the Strait of Hormuz independently, outside the scope of the coordinated evacuation framework.
The IMO had initiated the massive undertaking on Tuesday to evacuate more than 11,000 seafarers from the Persian Gulf, with several vessels successfully clearing the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday and Thursday as scheduled.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency confirmed it received reports that a cargo ship had come under fire off the Omani coast within the Strait of Hormuz corridor.
According to the UKMTO, an unidentified projectile struck the starboard side of the vessel, damaging its superstructure some 7.5 nautical miles southeast of the Omani city of Dahit, though the captain reported no casualties onboard.
The escalation comes just days after Iran and the United States remotely signed a memorandum of understanding on the evening of June 18, intended to formalize an end to the military conflict that erupted on February 28.
That diplomatic blueprint established a firm timeline for Washington to lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports in exchange for Tehran restoring safe, unhindered navigation through the vital Strait of Hormuz.
