TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said he earmarked Rp5 trillion for disaster management through the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), including to combat forest fires. The government is open to raising this budget if the spending for wildfire management swells.
"They have Rp5 trillion. If it's not enough, we'll add more later," Purbaya said at the Ministry of Finance Office in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Purbaya mentioned that the BNPB has not yet submitted the total budget requirement for forest fire management to the Ministry of Finance. The request for additional budget is submitted through the BNPB, and the Ministry of Finance will then adjust the support based on what is required on the ground.
According to him, the Indonesian government, in principle, stands ready to raise the budget for disaster management, but the amount hinges on the BNPB's operational needs for wildfire handling.
The budget requirement for forest fire management is not expected to be as large as the budget required to address the disaster in Aceh.
Purbaya believed that a higher budget was required to address the disaster in Aceh, as it was much greater in scale. Furthermore, he said, the government is providing special treatment for the disaster management budget because it concerns the safety and interests of the public. However, he warned that the budget must be used responsibly and according to needs.
The Minister of Finance warned against misuse or unreasonable increases in the disaster management budget. The management for disaster budget, he said, requires a different approach than general government spending because it directly relates to public safety.
