Indonesia Confident It Won't Need Rice Imports Until End of 2025: Minister

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has assured that Indonesia will not need to import rice until the end of 2025, citing strong domestic production and higher national reserves.

“In the past two years, we had to import rice to boost government reserves. But this year, God willing, there will be no imports because our stock is abundant,” Amran said on Friday.

He explained that Indonesia’s rice reserves currently stand at around 4 million tons, double last year’s 2 million tons. The harvest in 2025 is also projected to reach 34–35 million tons, equivalent to an increase of 4 million tons of rice compared to last year.

“This additional 4 million tons will also boost farmers’ income by Rp60 trillion. We are grateful for this achievement, which stems from the President’s initiative to simplify regulations, expand production facilities, and improve access to fertilizer, among other measures,” Amran said.

The minister added that the rise in production has significantly improved farmers’ terms of trade (NTP). “Farmers’ welfare, as reflected in the NTP, has risen by 123 percent. Despite price fluctuations, the government remains committed to stabilizing prices and supporting farmers,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, the Head of the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) for South Sumatra and Bangka Belitung, Mersi Windrayani, reported that rice stocks in her region currently stand at 99,000 tons, enough to meet local demand for the next five to six months.

“This will continue to grow as we keep absorbing rice from several regions,” she said.
