TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) has reaffirmed that it will continue its peacekeeping mission in Lebanon despite an artillery attack that killed one Indonesian soldier and injured three others.

“TNI reaffirms its commitment to carrying out its duties as part of the world peace mission under the mandate of the United Nations (UN) in a professional and responsible manner, while continuing to prioritize the safety of its personnel,” TNI Headquarters Information Center chief Major General Aulia Dwi Nasrullah said when contacted by Antara in Jakarta on Monday.

He said the peacekeeping mission is part of the TNI’s duty in carrying out the state’s mandate to help create world peace, as stipulated in the preamble of Indonesia’s 1945 Constitution.

Even so, Aulia stressed that the TNI would not neglect the safety of its personnel deployed in Lebanon.

The TNI has instructed its soldiers to increase operational vigilance while on duty, in line with standards set by the United Nations.

While continuing the mission, the TNI will also keep monitoring developments in Lebanon to determine its next steps.

“TNI is also continuing to monitor developments on the ground and prepare contingency measures in line with the dynamics in the Lebanon mission area,” he said.

One Indonesian soldier was killed and three others were wounded after being hit by artillery fire while serving on a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon on Sunday, March 29.

Aulia said the attack occurred amid escalating conflict in Lebanon, particularly in the country’s south.

The escalation triggered several attacks, one of which struck the area where the Indonesian contingent was stationed in Adshit al-Qusyar, southern Lebanon, on Sunday.

The soldier killed in the attack was identified as Private First Class (Praka) Farizal Rhomadhon. The three wounded soldiers were Praka Rico Pramudia, Praka Bayu Prakoso, and Praka Arif Kurniawan.

“The fallen soldier is currently lying in state at the East Sector Headquarters (HQ), and the administrative process for repatriation to Indonesia is being completed with assistance from the Indonesian Embassy in Beirut,” Aulia said.

“Praka Rico Pramudia sustained serious injuries, while Praka Bayu Prakoso and Praka Arif Kurniawan suffered minor injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment,” he added.

Aulia said the TNI has not yet been able to explain who was behind the attack or what the motive was.

“The incident occurred amid ongoing exchanges of artillery fire, and it has not yet been confirmed which party directly caused the incident. The investigation is still being conducted by UNIFIL,” he said.
