TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The match between the U-23 Indonesian national team and Laos in the U-23 Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers ended in a 0-0 draw. The game took place at Gelora Delta Stadium, Sidoarjo, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
The draw places Indonesia in the second position in Group J, just behind South Korea. Laos is in third place. South Korea leads the standings after defeating Macau with a score of 5-0.
Match Progression
Indonesian U-23 national team coach Gerald Vanenburg fielded Cahya Supriadi in the goal. He was supported by four defenders: Muhammad Ferarri, Kakang Rudianto, Kadek Arel Priyatna, and Dony Tri Pamungkas.
In the midfield, Vanenburg relied on three midfielders, Toni Firmansyah, Robi Darwis, and Arkhan Fikri. Struick and Raven were key attackers against Laos' defense. They were supported by Persija's player Muhammad Rayhan Hannan on the right wing.
Indonesia applied pressure from the beginning of the first half. The young Garuda squad dominated ball possession while Laos relied on tight and compact pressing. This situation made it difficult for Indonesia to deliver the ball into Laos' penalty box.
Indonesia briefly scored a goal in the fifth minute through a combination by Rayhan Hannan and Jens Raven. However, the goal was annulled as the linesman judged that Raven was in an offside position. The score returned to 0-0.
Arkhan Fikri was the driving force in Indonesia's midfield in creating space. However, he faced a compact opponent's block. Despite dominating, Indonesia mostly circulated the ball in the midfield.
In the 24th minute, Indonesia attempted another approach to score. Toni Firmansyah received a short pass from outside the penalty box. He took a long-range shot, but the goalkeeper Kop Lokphathip managed to block it.
The Garuda squad had a golden opportunity in the 44th minute through Jens Raven's action after coming out of the melee following a throw-in by Robi Darwis. However, his shot missed the target. After three minutes of additional time, the score remained 0-0 at the end of the first half.
Second Half
First-half statistics showed Indonesia's dominance over Laos. The Garuda squad had 70 percent ball possession compared to Laos' 30 percent. With this ball possession, Indonesia created 13 goal-scoring opportunities, and seven of them were on target.
In the second half, coach Gerald Vanenburg made two changes. He substituted Jens Raven and Kakang Rudianto with Ricky Pratama and Hoky Caraka. However, the changes did not alter the course of the game significantly.
Indonesia only had a chance in the 55th minute through a shot by Arkhan Fikri from outside the penalty box. Ten minutes later, Toni Firmansyah also had a similar opportunity. However, both players' shots were blocked by goalkeeper Kop Lokphathip.
Laos practically relied on a counter-attack scheme. Indonesia had a clear opportunity in the 72nd minute. Through a counter-attack, they received a breakthrough pass from Rafael Struick. However, the goalkeeper of Laos managed to ward off the shot.
Entering the final phase of the game, Indonesia continued to apply pressure. Apart from the outstanding performance of goalkeeper Kop Lokphathip, Indonesia still struggled to create clear opportunities from within Laos' penalty box.
Indonesian attacks were mostly sporadic and ultimately fruitless. The score remained 0-0 until the final whistle.
