TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Indonesian citizen (WNI) was apprehended by the United States (US) Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a raid at the Hyundai electric vehicle plant in Georgia. According to Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indonesian citizen with the initials CHT was at the Hyundai Metaplant. During the raid, CHT was on a business visit at Hyundai and had complete documentation for his agenda in the US.
"CHT had a planned business trip for 1 month in the US and was equipped with passport, visa, and an invitation from the company," said Judha in a statement quoted from Antara on Sunday, September 7, 2025.
Regarding CHT's arrest, the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Houston has communicated with the Folkston ICE Processing Center in Georgia, where CHT is currently detained. However, ICE has not provided more detailed information about CHT following his arrest.
The Consulate General has also communicated with CHT's coworkers and Hyundai Metaplant, said Judha. "The Consulate General will provide consular assistance for CHT," he said.
A total of 475 people, some of whom are South Korean nationals, were apprehended and detained during the U.S. immigration authorities' raid on the Hyundai electric vehicle plant, according to authorities on Friday, September 5, 2025. Special agents responsible for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for Georgia, Steven Schrank, stated that the apprehension operation conducted on Thursday, September 4, 2025, was carried out after several months of investigation into Hyundai Metaplant in Ellabell, Georgia.
The operation involved HSI, FBI, Customs and Border Protection, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and US Marshals.
In response to the raid, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun stated on Saturday that he is ready to travel to Washington to discuss the detention of hundreds of his country's citizens at the Hyundai battery plant. "We are deeply concerned and feel a great responsibility for the apprehension of our citizens. We will soon discuss sending a senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the location," he said.
