TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian House Speaker Puan Maharani ensures that the parliament will undergo institutional reform. The politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle stated that the House of Representatives (DPR) is improving in order to meet people's expectations.
"I myself will lead the reform of the DPR," said Puan in a written statement on Thursday, September 4, 2025.
Puan emphasizes that, in principle, the DPR will continue to improve itself. This improvement follows the recent wave of protests targeting the DPR. "We will incorporate the aspirations of the people into constructive inputs," stated Puan.
As for Puan, she led a meeting between the leaders of the DPR and several leaders of political party factions in the DPR. They gathered to discuss the transformation of the DPR, including the people's aspirations.
Present at the meeting were the Deputy House Speaker from Gerindra party faction, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, the Deputy House Speaker from PKB party faction, Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal, and the Deputy House Speaker from NasDem party faction, Saan Mustopa. Several faction leaders in the DPR also attended the meeting. The meeting took place in the Meeting Room of the DPR Leadership, the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta.
The House Speaker said that the result of the meeting was that all faction leaders agreed to eliminate housing allowances for members. They also agreed to impose a moratorium on official visits for members and DPR commissions.
Previously, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad asserted that the parliament would soon undergo improvement.
"We have coordinated with all DPR leaders recently," Dasco stated at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. He mentioned that there are several things they have done and will do. Firstly, they are conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the DPR members' allowances. In particular, Dasco mentioned that the housing allowances were halted as of August 31, 2025.
In addition to stopping the allowances, the parliament agreed to impose a moratorium on official visits or foreign business trips for DPR members. The parliament also conducted efficiencies in domestic business trips.
Dasco then added, "The reform of the DPR will be led directly by the House Speaker, Puan Maharani, to make the DPR a better and more transparent institution."
