TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Executive Board of the All-Indonesian Student Association (BEM SI) has confirmed plans to hold a demonstration on August 29, 2025. Fatin Humairo, Coordinator of the BEM SI Women’s Forum for Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and South Tangerang (Jabodetabek and Banten), conveyed the announcement.
Fatin noted that BEM SI’s planned action differs from other student and labor groups, who will stage demonstrations a day earlier, on August 28. She said the date was decided after consolidation deliberations.
“Most likely, we will still proceed on the agreed date, regardless of the presence of other alliances that will act the day before,” Fatin told Tempo on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
This demonstration, themed ‘Indonesia Cemas 2025’ (in English, Indonesia in Distress or Indonesia Worried), will continue the series of actions that began on July 28. BEM SI plans to pursue its previous nine demands, along with two new points.
Fatin highlighted the new focus areas: rejecting the practice of dual office-holding and urging the enactment of the Asset Seizure Bill.
The previous nine demands include:
Reviewing Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 1 of 2025, which focuses on cost efficiency in implementing the State Budget (APBN) and Regional Budget (APBD) for 2025.
Ensuring transparency regarding development and public taxes.
Conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the free nutritious meal program.
Rejecting the problematic revision of the Mineral and Coal Mining Law.
Opposing the dual function of the TNI.
Enacting the Asset Seizure Bill.
Improving the quality of education and healthcare nationwide.
Rejecting impunity and ensuring accountability for serious human rights violations.
Opposing perceived power plays by the Jokowi administration in Prabowo Subianto’s government.
BEM SI is targeting around 500 students to participate in the August 29 demonstration. While no other alliances have confirmed participation, reports suggest that several campuses outside the BEM SI network may join. “UI reportedly wants to join, but it’s not confirmed yet,” Fatin said.
She emphasized that the date could change only if another group presents similar demands and BEM SI decides to coordinate. “Or in cases where we’ve demonstrated twice before. But for now, the date is confirmed for August 29,” she added.
