TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran has introduced a new mechanism governing ship transit through the Strait of Hormuz, amid a standoff in negotiations with the US over the strategic waterway, Tehran's state-run Press TV reported and cited by Anadolu on Tuesday, May 5, 2025.
Under the system, ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz will receive an email from an address associated with the Persian Gulf Straits Authority (PGSA) informing them of the transit regulations.
The ships are then required to comply with the framework before receiving transit permission.
The move comes as Iran tightens its control over maritime traffic in the strait, a key route for global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments.
Iran has imposed tighter controls on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for the joint US-Israeli attack on Tehran on February 28.
Recent statements from Iranian officials have stated that ships must follow predetermined routes and obtain permission to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
The US, meanwhile, has deployed naval forces in the region to support commercial shipping.
