TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Wednesday that communication with Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is currently "very difficult" and described his presence as a "source of immense strength" for the country.
In an interview broadcast on Iranian state television to mark the second anniversary of his inauguration, Pezeshkian stated that the more openly officials convey various issues to the Supreme Leader, the easier it becomes to reach a mutual understanding.
As quoted by ANTARA, he described Khamenei as an “extraordinary” figure, noting that he was impressed by his ethics, humility, and way of thinking.
Pezeshkian also accused certain parties of attempting to “create division” within the country by exploiting the Supreme Leader's message regarding the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran.
The 14-point framework was signed on June 17, 2026, by U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to formalize a ceasefire, lift the naval blockade, and end active military operations.
Despite initially expressing a number of objections, Khamenei publicly supported the MoU.
The Iranian president stated that Iran's enemies continue to escalate pressure through sanctions and military confrontation, aiming to stoke public discontent and incite protests. He described the current situation as the most difficult period since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Mojtaba Khamenei became Iran's Supreme Leader on March 8 after his father, Ali Khamenei, was killed in a joint U.S.-Israel airstrike in Tehran on February 28.
The change in leadership occurred while Iran was engaged in a direct military confrontation with the United States following a joint U.S.-Israeli offensive. Iran subsequently retaliated by launching missile and drone attacks targeting Gulf nations that host U.S. military bases.
In April, the U.S. and Iran reached a ceasefire agreement, and in June, they signed a MoU mediated by Pakistan, aiming to end the military conflict and achieve a long-term peace agreement.
However, the agreement collapsed last month when both sides resumed attacks on each other for nearly two weeks, before Trump abruptly halted the bombing amidst reports of talks to resolve the conflict.
